Picturing Writing: Fostering Literacy Through Art® uses simple crayon resist art techniques and quality picture books to teach the art of writing.

Experience a developmentally appropriate way to teach poetry to elementary school-age students (and beyond) through creating simple crayon resist-based paintings and then learning how to read those pictures to access detail and description.

Learn a variety of simple yet engaging art techniques that will inspire rich language. Teach your students how they can make their paintings “come alive” while exploring a variety of poetic forms from very simple to more sophisticated. Teach your students how to establish mood in a piece of writing through the Picturing Writing brainstorming/poetry writing process.

Because pictures offer a universal language, the Picturing Writing “paint first and then write” process not only captivates a wide range of learners, but also, through its highly scaffolded process, will transform all your students into confident artists and writers.

Picturing Writing provides an enticing alternative pathway into writing for English learners and others who struggle with reading and writing. Supported by best practices and decades of independent research, this evidence-based, multimodal approach can be easily aligned with your grade-level ELA Standards in all 5 strands: reading, writing, listening, speaking, and language.

Whether you teach the youngest of artists/writers, or those more experienced, join us in exploring Picturing Writing through the art of poetry.

No previous art experience necessary!

My children viewed themselves as creators of important artistic work.

– Bette Stow-Cvetanovich, SPED teacher

Picturing Writing and Image-Making have helped every type of learner in my classroom embrace the writing process. This multitiered approach provides innate scaffolding and differentiation, allowing students to access examples of rich mentor texts, strong vocabulary, and visuals through multiple modalities and at their own levels.

– Victoria Hanson, third-grade teacher

In Artists/Writers Workshop, I learned how to paint pictures in Mrs. Rafferty’s mind.

– Steven, grade 1

Look at the picture for a long time and you kind of get into the picture and feel stuff, like if there is a breeze or something.

– Cooper, grade 3
