Image-Making Research-Based Animal Trifold Workshop
November 11, 2024 – 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM ET Virtual
Discover the power of this unique collage-based approach to writing that stimulates creativity while deepening engagement in the writing process.
Learn how to expand the ways students read and write informational text through this skills-dense, streamlined version of the original Image-Making collage process. During this hands-on virtual workshop, teachers will conduct visual as well as traditional text-based research on an animal of their choice. After creating a portfolio of hand-painted textured papers, teachers will learn how to embed facts into their collage images as well as their written text. They will also be introduced to compelling, more engaging ways to write informational text beyond traditional straight expository writing. As teachers craft their own Who Am I? animal trifold, they must consider how to keep their audience guessing. Here’s a hint: Save your “give-away clue” for the end!
Image-Making Within The Writing Process® is an innovative evidence-based approach to teaching writing that uses collage made from hand-painted textured papers to construct meaning. Students create their own portfolios of colorful, hand-painted papers as they explore a variety of simple art techniques. These textured papers become the raw materials for constructing captivating collage images. As students give shape to their ideas through cutting and pasting, they are able to rehearse, draft, and revise their meaning before setting pencil to paper.
This hands-on, multimodal approach to teaching writing gives students access to the dual languages of pictures and words to develop and record their ideas. It allows students to enter the reading/writing process from a position of personal strength and enthusiasm. Because pictures serve as a universal language, Image-Making provides an enticing alternative pathway into reading and writing for English Learners and others students who struggle with the written word.

I had great success using these methods with English Learners and other at-risk students. This visual approach promotes oral language skills and writing that flows directly from the pictures students have painted with care.
– Donna Garcia, Instructor of Language & Literacy, UNM
Picturing Writing and Image-Making have helped every type of learner in my classroom embrace the writing process. This multi-tiered approach provides innate scaffolding and differentiation, allowing students to access examples of rich mentor texts, strong vocabulary, and visuals through multiple modalities and at their own levels.
– Victoria Hanson, third grade teacher
I never knew you could put so many facts into a picture. When I added my words, my animal came to life!
