Picturing Writing Weather Into Winter Poetry Workshop
2 Virtual after-school sessions in November
Looking for an engaging winter project that promises to captivate your wide range of learners while expanding vocabulary and teaching mood?

Picturing Writing: Fostering Literacy Through Art® uses simple crayon resist art techniques and quality picture books to teach the art of writing.

Dive into Artists/Writers Workshop during two after-school sessions to learn simple crayon resist-based art techniques to create simple representations of different kinds of weather. These paintings will be used to inspire poetry rich in sensory description.
During this Picturing Writing poetry unit, learn simple art and writing techniques for expanding students’ vocabularies and teaching the power of word choice. Learn how to make your paintings “come alive” by selecting just the right words to describe what is happening in the picture.
This PW Weather into Winter Poetry Workshop offers a variety of poetry formats—from very simple to more complex— that can be used for writing poetry across the curriculum. This updated unit also includes opportunities for informational writing and opinion writing (the latter on the About the Artist/Writer page).
Picturing Writing is an innovative, evidence-based approach to teaching writing designed to meet the needs of a wide range of learners. This highly scaffolded, multimodal approach gives students access to visual as well as verbal tools for developing and recording their ideas.
Because pictures offer a universal language, Picturing Writing allows students to enter the reading/writing process from a position of strength and enthusiasm. It provides an enticing, alternative pathway into writing for English Learners and others who struggle with reading and writing.
Supported by best practices and decades of independent research, this evidence-based, multimodal approach can be easily aligned with your grade-level ELA Standards in all 5 strands: reading, writing, listening, speaking, and language.
Whether you teach the youngest of artists/writers, or those more experienced, join us in exploring Picturing Writing through the art of poetry.
No previous art experience necessary!

My children viewed themselves as creators of important artistic work.
– Bette Stow-Cvetanovich, SPED teacher
Picturing Writing and Image-Making have helped every type of learner in my classroom embrace the writing process. This multitiered approach provides innate scaffolding and differentiation, allowing students to access examples of rich mentor texts, strong vocabulary, and visuals through multiple modalities and at their own levels.

In Artists/Writers Workshop, I learned how to paint pictures in Mrs. Rafferty’s mind.
– Steven, grade 1
Look at the picture for a long time and you kind of get into the picture and feel stuff, like if there is a breeze or something.
