NEW! Picturing Writing Butterfly Life Cycle Workshop
3 Virtual afterschool sessions in April
Combine creativity & rigor using an evidence-based approach that engages all learners

Picturing Writing: Fostering Literacy Through Art® uses simple crayon resist art techniques and quality picture books to teach the art of writing.

This new Butterfly Life Cycle Workshop offers an engaging seasonal writing unit that utilizes proven Picturing Writing strategies and practices. It addresses ELA Standards for informational writing while also engaging students in reading, speaking, listening and language. This unit is aligned with Next Gen Science Standards for Structure and Function and Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems. It offers a strong model for integrating Picturing Writing across the content areas.
Over three 2-hour after-school sessions, this experiential workshop will introduce (or review) Artists/Writers Workshop and the crayon resist painting process along with supplemental art techniques. As an informational writing unit, teachers will learn how to elicit facts from visual as well as written resources, embed facts into their paintings, and then read their paintings to access detail and description. With a focus on using strong verbs and adjectives, participants will discover the power of using image and text to empower students as informational writers.
Picturing Writing: Fostering Literacy Through Art® is an innovative, evidence-based approach to teaching writing designed to meet the needs of a wide range of learners. This highly scaffolded, multimodal approach gives students access to visual as well as verbal tools for developing and recording their ideas. Because pictures offer a universal language, Picturing Writing allows students to enter the reading/writing process from a position of strength and enthusiasm. It provides an enticing, alternative pathway into writing for emergent writers, English Learners, and others who struggle with reading and writing.
No previous art experience necessary!

The Picturing Writing process is magical! Students are engaged, inspired, and motivated throughout each and every step! When the crayons and paints come out, there is joy and excitement. Once the art is complete, I have been amazed at how the words just flow for my students; the pictures come alive!

Every child, no matter his or her strengths, abilities, or challenges can be successful using Picturing Writing and Image-Making.
Dr. Susan O’Connor, Director of Elementary Instruction
I had great success using these methods with English Learners and other at-risk students. This visual approach promotes oral language skills and writing that flows directly from the pictures students have painted with care.
Donna Garcia, Instructor of Language & Literacy, UNM
