This one-day workshop provides teachers with a dynamic model for integrating Picturing Writing into their science or social studies curriculum using a combination of poetry and, if desired, expository writing. Opinion or persuasive pieces may also be added to this art-and-literature-based project.
Working with theme of animals in their habitat, teachers will create their own research-based crayon resist animal tri-fold which can be used as a model for designing a number of different short integrated curriculum units of study. This workshop is aligned with the Common Core with its emphasis on reading and writing informational pieces. Visual and written research will be conducted and the use of mentor texts modeled throughout the process. Simple crayon resist art techniques will be taught. Options for designing other integrated curriculum unit will be discussed.
