Our 2021 PICTURING WRITING VIRTUAL SUMMER INSTITUTEoffers a menu of Picturing Writing Workshop options, mornings only during the last two weeks of June, prior to the start of summer school.
Because Picturing Writing and Image-Making Within the Writing Process are evidence based literacy models, schools and districts can use
ESSER l, II, or III FUNDS to cover costs of Professional Development, including all art and instructional materials needed
to address learning loss or unfinished learning this year.
Take advantage of this unique funding opportunity for training teachers in these engaging Standards-Based Integrated Curriculum Units of Study
that also align with many Social-Emotional Learning Competencies. These proven, art-based literacy models offer fabulous summer school
programming as well as rigorous, engaging learning throughout the school year.
Remote Professional Development Now Available!
In response to COVID-19, we are now offering remote Professional Development with or without graduate credit. We are able to offer
a variety of graduate credit options through Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) in addition to PD hours. Teachers interested in graduate credit
will be able to customize a graduate credit course to meet their individual needs.
With our first workshop series having launched in June of 2020, we welcome your input as to what would best serve your professional
needs. Professional Development can include both hands-on step-by-step teacher training as well as follow-up support during classroom implementation.
In fact, Beth recently completed teacher training that involved daily Zooming into the classroom to facilitate art and writing lessons as she worked
directly with the students. Let us know how we can support your teacher-training or refining your practice.
Have you already taken Picturing Writing but feel like you need a refresher? This is possible too!
Beth Olshansky has been working with teachers and students in local schools to align Picturing Writing and Image-Making
with the English Language Arts Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards. This has involved refining existing
units as well as developing new units of study. This exciting work allows teachers to address The Standards while engaging
a wider range of students.

Title IV-A Funds for a Well-Rounded Education
Does your school receive Title IV-A Funds designated for a well-rounded education? If so, talk to your administrator about applying
some of those funds for Picturing Writing/Image-Making teacher training and materials. As an evidence-based literacy model, schools are able to apply
Title I, Title II, Title III, Title IV-A, and Title V Funds toward teacher training, instructional materials, and art supplies.

New Instructional Video Almost Completed!
Beth is in the final stages of completing a new comprehensive instructional video detailing the Image-Making Research-Based Animal
Trifold Unit. Filmed in Victoria Hanson's third-grade classroom at Newmarket Elementary School, this video invites teachers and students into the
classroom to watch the entire process unfold. The video, along with a teachers manual and support materials, will offer a step-by-step guide to the process.
The Center for the Advancement of Art-Based Literacy is pleased to announce that we have moved off the University of
New Hampshire campus and will operate as a nonprofit entity in partnership with the Institute for Art-Based Literacy in Durham, New
Hampshire. Our Center will continue to provide quality teacher-training and art & instructional materials to teachers across the United States and

Picturing Writing: Fostering Literacy Through Art and Image-Making Within the Writing Process qualify as Tier
II Evidence-Based Literacy Models under the Every Student Succeeds Act.
We have had a groundswell of interest in our work from teachers in French-immersion schools in Canada. Some of
our Picturing Writing mentor texts and posters and Image-Making mentor texts are available in French.
