Picturing
Writing: Fostering Literacy Through Art and Image-Making Within
The Writing Process are two dynamic, evidence-based approaches to teaching writing developed by Beth
Olshansky to meet the needs of students with diverse learning styles.
Through the use of simple hands-on art experiences, the study
of quality picture books, and an on-going Artists/Writers Workshop,
these innovative approaches give students access to visual and kinesthetic
as well as verbal modes of thinking at each and every stage of the
writing process. They allow all learners to enter the reading/writing process
from a position of personal strength and enthusiasm.
Picturing Writing and Image-Making treat words and pictures as parallel, complementary, and equal languages for learning. Together, they provide an engaging alternative pathway into literacy learning that has proven its effectiveness for a wide range of learners.
